In 2014, Seychelles joined the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellence Risk Mitigation initiative (CBRN CoE) through which it benefited with various projects.
One of the projects was the Project 60, which focused on improving nuclear security across eleven African countries including Seychelles, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania.
The project was set to be completed in December 2022 after running for five years. The final meeting for the CBRN Project 60 took place in Kigali, Rwanda on December 14 and 15, 2022 whereby National Focal Points and regulators from Project 60 participating countries were joined by representatives of the project’s managing and implementing partners to conclude the Project. Amelie Azemia and Sylvester Alvis, from the Employment department, which is also the regulatory body for nuclear security, represented Seychelles in the meeting.
The project has provided numerous experts missions and trainings to the P-60 countries. Seychelles has benefited through review of its radiation legislation, trainings on radiation and nuclear security and the development of a national radiological emergency plan.
During the two days’ meeting, participants had the opportunity to observe field exercise on illegal transportation of radioactive sources which was led by the Rwandan authorities, review the numerous accomplishments of this project and express themselves about this project.
The participants conveyed their appreciation on the implementation of this project and noted that the project has brought along many benefits for the regulatory staff and customs officers. The ENCO team noted that though the project has ended participants should continue enhancing their nuclear security system within their own country.
