Pillay R Group hosts people with disabilities

Coincides with its director’s birthday on December 31

After a two-year break due to Covid-19, a group of people with disabilities were this year treated to a special lunch by local company, Pillay R Group, at the Espace building over the weekend.

The event coincided with the birthday of its director, Jayanthi Ramakrishnan Pillay, on December 31, and as is customary each year she shares her birthday cake with the disabled, presents each one with a gift and hosts a special lunch for them.

The event’s organiser, Doris Belle, said unfortunately this year, Mrs Pillay could not attend as she was overseas.

“Although she is not in the country, Mrs Pillay still wanted us to hold this event and spend the afternoon with you, especially since we have not been able to host you for the past two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She would like for you to have a good time, enjoy the gifts and lunch as well as the cake made especially for her birthday,” said Mrs Belle.

It should be noted that less than a dozen people had turned up for the event, however those present appreciated the gesture and was enjoying themselves.

Saying a few words on behalf of the disabled persons, Anil Quatre and Jacob Chang-Time expressed their gratitude towards Mrs Pillay and the Pillay R Group for such a kind gesture during the festive season and thanked her for the kindness.

The company’s chief operating officer, Sasi Menon, said Pillay R Group has been associated with supporting people in the community for the over 15 years and for the past two years it has not been able to hold the event the way it wanted to, due to the pandemic. However, he said in 2023, the activity will go back to the level it was since its inception.

“Hopefully from next year onwards, I wish that we have a group of more than hundred people, we have a big event, a half day event where at least all of those who are associated, especially abled people can come present their skills, their abilities, so we all celebrate a day like this on December 31,” said Mr Menon.

It should be noted that since few people attended the event over the weekend, another one will be planned earlier in the year to cater for more people.
