Seyboks have one hand on trophy as Seychelles lose to Barbarians

 

With only one match left to play in the series, Seyboks are mathematically the champions of the inaugural Cable & Wireless Island Nations Cup, after second-placed Seychelles lost to the International Barbarians in their fifth match on Saturday at Stad Popiler.

Seychelles lost the match 9-16, while Seyboks registered an 18-7 win over Madagascar.

In the four-team league, both Seyboks (made up of South African expatriates) and Seychelles (made up of locals) have registered four victories and a defeat, with the former, however accumulating more points due to bonuses collected for winning matches by more than seven tries, or losing by less than two tries.

The South Africans have accumulated 17 points from four wins and one defeat from five matches played, while second-placed Seychelles are on 12 points after the same number of wins and defeats.

The International Barbarians (featuring all other nationalities presently residing, or working in Seychelles) are presently third on eight points from two wins and three defeats out of five matches, while Madagascar (made up of Malagasy expatriates) are fourth on only two points from five defeats in as many matches.

The last matches of the series will be played on November 19 at Stad Popiler where the International Barbarians will play Madagascar and Seychelles will clash against Seyboks.

Hendrik-Jan Mosca of Seyboks is presently leading the ranking with most tries scored ‒ 14 ‒, while Dale Hampson and Jesse Muthoka of the International Barbarians are second and third respectively after scoring 13 and 10 tries apiece.

Meanwhile, the Seychelles Rugby Union (SRU) in partnership with the Seychelles Breweries will be hosting a classic beach rugby tournament on Saturday November 26 at the Beau Vallon beach.

Entry fee for the eight-a-side tournament is R200.
