Football: Caf Champions League – Second round second leg

Sundowns players celebrate their win over La Passe

La Passe suffer another humiliating defeat, bow out with 1-15 aggregate score

La Passe have suffered another humiliating defeat on a 1-8 score at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the return leg match of the second round of the Confederation of African Football Champions League played on Friday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.

Academy graduate Cassius Mailula scored a hat-trick as Mamelodi Sundowns won the last 32 tie 15-1 on aggregate, having beaten Seychelles champions La Passe 7-0 the previous weekend in the first leg.

They therefore just missed out on equaling the record overall winning margin for a Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League qualifier. The record 16-1 margin for a Champions League qualifier was achieved by Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2020 edition when they thrashed another Seychellois club, Côte d'Or 11-1 at home and 5-0 away.

Both matches were staged in Pretoria because Seychelles lack an international-standard stadium and conceded home advantage in the first encounter.

According to reports, Sundowns dominated the match from start to finish at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, scoring eight times.

Academy graduate Cassius Mailula scored a hat-trick (39th, 45th and 86th minutes) while Gift Motupa struck a brace (70th and 90th minutes). Thapelo Morena (8th minute) and Haashim Domingo (76th minute), and Neo Maema (79th minute) were the other Sundowns who got on the scoresheet.

La Passe’s consolation goal was scored by Nomenjanahary Florent Rajaoniasy in the 38th minute to make it 1-1 on the night.

Sundowns ended the game with an 8-1 victory (15-1 on aggregate score) and will prepare for the Caf Champions League group stages and will be looking to go all the way and win the Champions League title for the second time having clinched it in 2016.
