Golf: 11th All Africa Team Championship     Seychelles ranked 12th overall

The Seychelles team

Four of Seychellois’ top golfers just completed the tour of Egypt for the All-Africa Team Championship, with Seychelles coming out 12th overall out of 16 countries.

Over a gruelling four-day, 72-hole tournament in Hurghada, Egypt where very warm weather, occasional wind and a very long course presented them with varied challenges, Dominic Bastienne, Adrian Andrade, Jerry Jean-Baptiste and Axel Andrade still managed to clinch the 12th spot with some very good performances.

Speaking of the All-African Team Championship, chairman of the Seychelles Golf Federation and head of the delegation, Michael Lavigne said:

“With our four players up against countries with substantially larger populations, we managed to show that our golfers are right up there with them in terms of playing standards.

“Seychelles’ performance in the Egypt Tour puts us on the map as a nation with some quality golfers, albeit a very small number.”

He went on to explain that these international competitions are crucial for the development of our golfers

“The experience of international tournaments is always critical for future events, and players who have more experience at an international level tend to perform even better at subsequent events.”

The Moroccan national elite golf team won the continental title on the course of El Gouna Golf Club in Hurghada in Egypt. They ended the uninterrupted domination of South Africa who had won the first 10 editions.

Composed of El Mehdi Fakori, Adam Bresnu, Nizar Bourehim and Soufiane Dahmane, the Moroccan national team won the title with 820 strokes in total (44 under par), beating South Africa by 8 strokes (36 under par). Kenya finished in third place to take the bronze medal with 10 under par.

In the individual ranking, South Africa’s Jonathan Bromhead was the star of the tournament, taking first place and the gold medal with a stunning 18 under par score. He carded 69, 70, 66 and 65 for a total 270 strokes.

Moroccans El Mehdi Fakori (-16) Adam Bresnu (-13), Nizar Bourehim (-10) and Soufiane Dahmane (+3) respectively occupied second, third, fourth and 16th places.

The team score is obtained by adding the best three of the four gross scores. The trophy is awarded to the team with the lowest aggregate score.

The biennial All Africa Golf Team Championship – considered Africa’s most prestigious amateur golf team event – is endorsed by The Royal & Ancient of St. Andrews (R&A) and the African Golf Confederation (AGC).
