LWMA confirms no box containing seafood products has been removed from landfill |15 October 2022
No box containing seafood products has been removed from the landfill at Providence, an official from the Land Waste Management Agency (LWMA) has confirmed.
Irwin Gopaul, landfill officer from the LWMA, met with the press yesterday where the frozen items had been dumped.
He was reacting to allegations that goods retrieved from the landfill were being sold on the market.
“In the presence of officers who were present on site, there are no products that have been stolen. There was an outside worker who attempted to take a few boxes and LWMA intercepted the person and made him return the boxes in the hole where all the seafood items had been dumped. Sanctions against the driver have already been taken and this incident occurred when they were trying to cover the discarded items with soil.”
ISPC Seychelles yesterday published an important notice on social media stating that it has come to its attention that ISPC branded seafood was being sold/distributed into the community on the black market.
“These products are not fit for consumption and is being stolen from the landfill after we disposed of a container of frozen seafood that had been fully defrosted and had started to decompose! ISPC strongly urges anybody offered these products not to purchase or consume them as they could be extremely dangerous.”
On the other hand, the public health services was alerted of the sale and distribution of seafood products of brand HOSO Shrimps Raw Traypack, PD Shrimps Raw and HOSO Scampi in the community following disposal that was carried out at the landfill on October 13, 2022 under the supervision of the public health services.
The public is being advised to refrain from purchasing and consuming the above mentioned products being sold on the black market as they are unfit for human consumption and could lead to severe food poisoning.
Mr Gopaul noted that anything coming in and going out of the landfill is controlled by LWMA. “If there is anything wrong, sanctions are taken.”
