The cause for a culture of unity in Seychelles                                           |03 June 2022

Seychelles is a sovereign state whereby a just peace and stability reign among the people. But is there a culture of UNITY within our country?

As a small island state, we need to fosterNational Unity in all aspects of our lives. As a small island nation, unity in diversity is paramount to ensure that unity among our people with diverse cultural, religious beliefs, social status, and other demographic differences are embraced herein. We, the Seychellois people need to set our focus on unity among individuals, communities, and political and social groups in order to demonstrate the National Unity that will lead us through the positive transformation, as per the long-term vision of our stand-in government.

We were born to be united with one another, especially in the family which has long been bonded by family peace, respect, and love for one another. But over time, it seems that we have lost those fundamental values and revert to conflicts, disagreement, malice, and other social ills, that have impacted the lives of our small populace. But where do we stand without UNITY?

With the emergence of other cultures within our society, unity in diversity is way important for our country and/or nation for national integration as it will help to disintegrate our people with different views and ideologies. Seychellois, if there is unity among us despite our differences, it will be barely impossible for a force to disintegrate us, as a nation. One can rest assured that citizens’ unity plays a very important role in maintaining peace and prosperity in a country.

As we stand to work together as one nation, unity in diversity plays an important role in the development of the country because a country that is integrated will always move on the path to development and constructive growth. In saying this, our country will face fewer internal issues than a socially unstable country divided into different terms, a case we need to address in this modern Seychelles!

In lieu of global recognition, though we stand as a country that is diverse, with National Unity within our sails, this will not only add value to our nation but will also be respected on international platforms. Thus, it will enhance our international standings and esteem. It will also set an example in the global eyes by displaying the values and morals of the citizens of our country who respect and support each other despite our differences, backgrounds, cultures, political stance, and opinions.

Seychellois, we need to co-exist peacefully. To live in peace is inevitable, but ending up in a conflict is a choice. (Madeleine, J. 2022). Diversity can also be the cause of internal conflicts but unity in diversity plays a very important role in maintaining peaceful co-existence with people with different cultures and backgrounds. National Unity will help us stay united despite our disagreements and differences.

I sincerely call on all Seychellois to look at the fundamental aspect of unity in the diversity of the family. A family may have people with different views, interests, opinions, or preferences who show their diversity in many aspects, but as a family, they demonstrate a sense of unity among them.

Unity in diversity teaches us that although we are from different caste, creeds, or races, these differences cannot keep us apart and we should always remain united for the betterment of our nation. This will be the most unique event that will be portraited in our country. It will not only make our nation unified and strengthened but it will also keep us alive in our diverse cultures, the traditional co-existence with love, respect, honour, harmony, and solidarity. The difference in culture, customs, festivals, music, plays, and dances makes our country vibrant, a melting pot, and makes us an incredible paradise in the world.

My National Unity position is clear – we need to let love, peace, UNITY, non-violence, and respect become part of our lives so that we can nurture a culture of unity in Seychelles and the future of our country will be brighter and more promising.

In concluding my write-up, I sincerely believe that development, peace, UNITY, and stability in Seychelles could be endorsed by a credible social network, strong trust between the people and the government, and strengthened trust between cultural and religious groups. A culture of UNITY in Seychelles would harmonize peace, non-violence, and continued stability by strengthening the psychological bonding between the Seychellois.

“WISHING ALL SEYCHELLOIS, A PROPOSED HAPPY NATIONAL UNITY DAY”
