President Ramkalawan is the new Chancellor of UniSey |04 March 2022
President Wavel Ramkalawan is the new Chancellor of the University of Seychelles (UniSey).
The position was offered to him during a courtesy call paid on him yesterday at State House by emeritus professor Dennis Hardy and Vice-Chancellor Joelle Perreau.
Mrs Perreau said that the decision to bestow the title of Chancellor on President Ramkalawan was proposed by the council and it received unanimous approval.
Professor Hardy expressed his delight that President Ramkalawan has agreed to take up the position of Chancellor of the UniSey, describing it as a great honour for everyone and that they are looking forward to working with President Ramkalawan as they make progress with the university.
Professor Hardy said it is very important to have someone who can speak for the university and identify with its values.
Vice-Chancellor Perreau added that this decision is important for the university as it gives them more credibility and visibility. A key feature mentioned in their strategic plan to promote and market UniSey as the National University.
Ms Perreau stressed that this shows the support of the government and the people.
She explained that as part of this pyramid with the President as the Chancellor, it will benefit the university as it will “bring the world to us and respect us better”.
The plan of the university is to get on all the programmes an international aspect and presenting UniSey to the world. This, she said, will get the world to trust the university and work with it.
She added that things will probably move faster for the university so that the students can have the opportunity to go abroad and it can also welcome international students.
Professor Hardy said the announcement came at a great time that the President has accepted the position as Chancellor as they are making the move towards internationalisation which the president is in favour of.
He added that they will be discussing ways on how to improve the campuses, renewing buildings and equipment and that the President will be able to better advise and support the university.
