Kenya hosts 24th plenary session of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia |28 January 2022
Kenya yesterday morning hosted the 24th Plenary Session of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS).
The virtual international meeting, which was presided over by Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, the cabinet secretary of defence of the Republic of Kenya, brought together over 80 participants from different States and organisations involved in the maritime domain.
Organised by the Republic of Kenya, the current chair of the CGPCS, with the support of the Indian Ocean Commission (secretariat), the one-day hybrid meeting was aimed mainly at adopting the CGPCS draft strategic plan which reviews the CGPCS focus beyond piracy.
The adopted plan will be brought to the United Nations security council meeting in February next month.
It is to be recalled that the formulation of the strategic plan, which aims to map out the future of the CGPCS for adoption by the Plenary Session yesterday, was one of the key points on the agenda of the CGPCS ‘Friends of the Chair’ meeting, held on December 16 last year in Mauritius.
