CBS hosts awareness session for A-level students from Independent School |02 December 2021
The Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) yesterday welcomed a group of students pursuing their A levels at the Independent School as part of an awareness session to broaden their knowledge about the institution and its mandate.
The session was initiated by Tainy Payet, Business and Economics teacher at the
Independent School. It stems from the fact that the group of students, who have just started their second year of A-level studies are all studying Economics alongside other subjects and are keen to know about the opportunities that exist in the financial sector.
Governor Caroline Abel welcomed such an initiative on the part of the Independent School which shows that CBS’ financial education plan and efforts to reach out to various segments of the population are being recognised, appreciated and even anticipated.
The topics covered include a brief history of central banking in Seychelles; the general economics of Seychelles with a focus on monetary policy formulation, implementation and transmission and the exchange rate regime; CBS’ regulatory oversight of the banking sector and its interaction with the banks; and the management of the country’s international reserves.
The group of students were also apprised of the employment opportunities that exist in the financial sector in general and the Guy Morel High Achievement Scholarship Programme set up by CBS to attract and inspire individuals to join this field.
The students had the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the CBS staff and Governor, not only on the topics of the day but on other economic realities relevant to the roles of CBS.
Governor Abel encouraged the students to work hard as they pursue their studies and to consider the various opportunities that exist within the financial sector as they ponder on their future careers.
Coincidentally, the event comes as CBS is celebrating 43 years of central banking in Seychelles. The Seychelles Monetary Authority, the precursor of the CBS as it is known today, was established on December 1, 1978.
