La Retraite Home for the Elderly celebrates 20th anniversary |06 November 2021
Twenty years on from its official opening in 2001, the La Retraite Home for the Elderly yesterday celebrated its 20th anniversary.
It was in a brief ceremony attended by principal secretary for Family Affairs Clive Roucou, director general for the Elderly and Disabled Rosa Morin, member of the National Assembly for Anse Etoile Georges Romain, director for the Elderly Liza Cadeau, and other friends of the home that the joyous occasion was celebrated together with the residents.
The celebrations kicked off with a spiritual reflection by Father Gabriel in which he urged that the elderly be respected, loved and cherished, considering the wisdom, experiences and skills they have amassed over the years, and which they can share with the younger generations.
He also blessed the residents of the home, praying for their health, wellbeing, and for God’s guiding hand and protection over them.
Newly appointed home administrator Judith Pillay in a short speech thanked the government for always recognising the elderly in Seychelles, going further to urge that senior citizens be honoured by society at large.
Ms Pillay also extended gratitude to employees at the home who work dedicatedly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents.
Ms Pillay went on to also thank generous sponsors, including wife of the Vice- President Stella Afif and the Retailers Association of Seychelles, among others.
For his part, PS Roucou reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards supporting the elderly generations at present and in future.
“As head of the division for the elderly and persons with disabilities, one thing I need to assure everyone is that government remains committed to taking care of our elderly. Within our division especially, we have the people who have the desire and enthusiasm to ensure our elderly homes are faring well, and to ensure that residents of all our homes are provided with the necessary services, that we continuously discuss how to improve the lives of our elderly,” said Ms Pillay.
“Together with the minister and director general we are continuously discussing additional services, collaboration with private businesses, and today we have MNA Romain who is also committed to assisting the home however need be. In general, the ministry and our department will continue to ensure that our elderly are living comfortably, as government does the necessary,” PS Roucou noted.
The chairman of the Retailers Association presented to residents gift hampers, while Lorna Henri, the home’s oldest resident who has spent just over 14 years at the facility, also received a token, and colourful flower bouquet. Mrs Henri says she enjoys residing at the facility along with other residents.
“I have been here for 14 years, what I like most is the peace and quiet and of course, having other residents to chit chat and pass the time with. I thank God for sustaining me and blessing me each day, as I am still in good health, and can do my own things, get around and all,” Mrs Henri stated.
The day of activities continued with a small exhibition produced by the residents themselves, such as jewellery, brooms, and local made delicacies and snacks.
