Women’s parliamentarians discuss pertinent issues related to rising cases of teenage pregnancies |05 November 2021
The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of the National Assembly on Wednesday met with Ms Loréa Rasool, an independent midwife working part time at the maternity ward of the Seychelles Hospital to learn more about and to have an in depth discussion on issues relating to the continued increase in teenage pregnancies.
The talk was held at the National Assembly’s members’ lounge.
The alarming increase in cases of teenage pregnancies in the country and the inaccessibility of contraceptives to adolescents due to the age gap as stipulated by law is a cause for concern for the women parliamentarians.
As a health professional, working as midwife, Ms Rasool witnesses the social impact of teenage pregnancy on the young mothers, their families and society as a whole.
The women parliamentarians have expressed their concerns and emphasis has been placed on the need to step up public education and more commitment in child protection.
They have also agreed that something must be done urgently to make a difference in protecting our young girls.
