Huge fish caught in Seychelles causes a stir in England |16 December 2016

A seven-foot-long Giant grouper (vyey krab) caught in Seychelles waters and later put on sale in a UK market, shocked and fascinated many who saw it there.

The fish was captured within 100 miles of Mahé Island by the long liner ‘Marlua One’ which belongs to Muditha Gunitilake and it took seven men to bring the 192kg fish onboard the boat.

It was later sold to the Sea Harvest seafood company, the main exporter of fresh fish in Seychelles.

David Bentley, the managing director of Sea Harvest, confirmed that they processed and exported the fish to a British distributor called Fresco Fisheries.

The fish was flown to the UK by Air Seychelles and Etihad via Abu Dhabi last Saturday.

Mr Bentley said the box in which it travelled had to be extended because the fish was so much bigger than usual.

He added that it is quite rare to catch a grouper as large as this one.

“We get big fish all the time but they are normally tuna and swordfish. We only see one of these fish every 18 months or so.”

The huge fish shocked and fascinated many people when it was displayed in Arndale market in Manchester and has been dubbed “the largest fish seen in Manchester”.

According to the Manchester Evening News the fish is expected to be cut up into meat estimated to be worth £5,000.
