Georges finishes fifth
Janet Georges was the last Seychellois lifter in action on Wednesday night at the African Weightlifting Championship in Yaoundé, Cameroon and she failed to finish among the medallists.
Georges could only finish in fifth position out of seven lifters in the 69kg weight category. She lifted 78kg in snatch and 97kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 175kg.
According to reports from Yaounde, Georges could have won at least one gold medal had she not failed her attempt to lift 82kg in snatch.
It was Cameroon’s own Arcangeline Fuoudji Sonkbou who claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 186kg (81kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk). Ikram Cherara of Algeria finished second with 183kg (80kg in snatch and 103kg in clean & jerk) and third place went to Kenyan Mercy Obiero who managed a performance of 76kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk for a total of 181kg.
Seychelles was represented at the championship by two other athletes – Clementina Agricole (58kg) and Rick Confiance (62kg).
Agricole won the bronze medal with a total lift of 178kg (77kg in snatch and 101kg in clean & jerk) in the 58kg class despite finishing with a rather poor performance. As for Confiance he could only finish sixth after lifting 230kg (100kg in snatch and 130kg in clean & jerk) in the 62kg weight category.
