Chess: National Championship - Stratonowitsch, Figaro claim victory |12 November 2015

Andre Stratonowitsch was once again victorious in the open category, while Dericka Figaro won the women’s division of the National Chess Championship held last weekend.

It’s been a good week for Seychelles chess with the visit of delegates from the African Chess Confederation and former world champion Zhu Chen. And last weekend saw the National Championship held at the St Louis community centre.

There were two categories held on the day. German Andre Stratonowitsch finished the tournament in first place in the open category. Russia’s Sergey Prokopyev was the runner-up, while Seychelles Chess Federation chairman Benjamin Hoareau finished third.

In the female category, it was Dericka Figaro who emerged as the victor, followed by Rachelle Hoareau in second place, with Liza Adeline settling for third.

Each category winner was rewarded with a cup, a gold medal and a laptop sponsored by the President’s Office, while the other competitors were rewarded with silver and bronze medals respectively while also grabbing tablets sponsored by Ben’s Import.
