Nine national records broken
Nine Seychelles national records were broken and another was set during the 12th Fédération Internationale de Natation (Fina) world short course championship held in Doha, Qatar from December 3-7.
A total of eight swimmers represented Seychelles at the competition, where Felicity Passon, Alexus Laird and Pierre-André Adam were the record breakers.
The country’s 4x50m mixed medley relay team of Alexus Laird, Felicity Passon, Pierre-André Adam and Dean Hoffman set a new record of 1:51.50.
Passon was the biggest performer as she broke five records. In the 100m freestyle, she erased her own record of 59.45 seconds to set a new time of 56.85 seconds. She also improved the 50m freestyle record to 26.00 seconds, improving her old time of 26.80 seconds.
Her next record time came in the 50m butterfly event as she clocked 28.49 seconds to improve her old time of 28.80 seconds. In the 100m butterfly event, Passon’s previous time was 1:05.20 and this time she swam faster to bring her time to 1:03.38.
Passon’s fifth record came in the 200m individual medley where she erased her previous best of 2:33.44 to set a new record of 2:31.74.
All of Passon’s previous times were set during the African Swimming championship in Uganda in April 2014.
Alexus Laird got three records and her first came in the 50m backstroke where she improved Passon’s time of 31.70 seconds for a new national record at 30.31 seconds.
She improved another of Passon’s records – the 100m backstroke – with a time of 1:02.20. Passon’s old best stood at 1:08.90. Her third record came in the 200m backstroke where she obliterated Julie Low-Thion’s record of 2:38.22 which had stood since December 2001. The new record is now 2:18.20.
A new men’s 200m breaststroke national record was beaten during the championship by Pierre-André Adam who stopped the clock at 2:35.28 to improve R. Bonne’s record of 2:35.66 set in 1997.
