MF Storm, Super 8 win to achieve doubles
After Cascade and Beau Vallon completed the doubles in volleyball on Saturday, it was the turn of MF Storm (women) and Super 8 (men) to achieve the same feat in handball on Sunday.
In the women’s final, league champions MF Storm, who have dominated the game here recently, met rivals Au Cap Sisters.
It promised to be a tense match and the score stayed close throughout with MF Storm eventually holding out for a 26-21 win to cap off another great season by achieving the league and cup double.
Au Cap Sisters, formerly Royal Queens, were last year’s SHF Cup winners after beating Teenz 51-12 in the final.
This is the sixth time MF Storm achieve a league and cup double. They had achieved consecutive wins in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The team’s former name was Rybar.
Durantha Brothers and Super 8 met each other in the men’s final and it was a much more competitive affair.
League champions Super 8 were looking to finish the season with another title to complete a double, while Durantha Brothers were looking to save their season by winning the federation cup.
The match was a very close affair as both teams were looking for a win and after extra-time the score remained level at 33 goals apiece.
Therefore, a penalty shootout was needed to determine the winners and Super 8 were luckier, scoring four goals compared to Durantha Brothers’ three to win the match 37-36.
Super 8 succeed Young Eagles who edged Durantha Brothers 32-31 in a highly-contested and interesting encounter last year.
