The reigning Young Male Athlete of the Year stopped the clock at 1 minute 01.83 seconds (1:01.83) to improve his personal best time by 4 seconds in the 50m pool of the Mohamed V Swimming Complex. There were eight swimmers in the final.
Mangroo, 17, also clocked 2:20.98 in the 200m freestyle to be ranked fifth out of seven.
Aurelie Fanchette missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s 200m individual medley, clocking 2:45.64 to finish fourth out of seven. In the 50m freestyle she finished eighth out of 22 with 30.46 seconds.
In track & field athletics, Carlos Marianne did not take part in the 400m race, which was held one hour before the scheduled time.
According to reports, Marianne was supposed to be in the call room at 5.45pm and he was there on time but was told the race had already taken place at 5.30pm, contrary to the programme.
The Seychelles team are expected to make a formal complaint about the incident to the organisers.
In table tennis, Anil Nibourette lost all his matches – 0-3 and 1-3 to Moroccans Malak and Mahmaml, and 0-3 to Mauritian Warren Li Kam Wa – on Thursday in group A of the second round of the group phase.
Nibourette finished second in his pool after a win – by walkover against a Malagasy – and two losses – 0-3 to a Congolese and 2-3 to an Ethiopian in the first round.
Christy Bristol got just one win on a 3-0 score against a Moroccan in three second-round games. She lost 0-3 to a Ugandan and 2-3 to a player from Congo-Brazzaville.
Bristol finished first in her group at the end of the first round after winning 3-0 against a player from Djibouti and walking over a Nigerian in her second match.
Yesterday, boxer Andrique Allisop was to enter the ring for the final of the featherweight (57kg) division against Moroccan Malek Said.
Allisop won on points – 15-3 – against Togolese Hounkpatin Jomlangam in one of the two semifinals on Wednesday, while Said breezed past Tayson Ndjebouboum of Chad 17-4.
