RCSS undertakes community survey on flooding and storm surges |20 September 2025

The Red Cross Society of Seychelles is presently conducting a community Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices survey on flooding and storm surges on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

The survey from September 17 to 23, 2025 involves the participation of 30 volunteers who are covering 17 districts identified to be affected by flooding and storm surges. They are namely Anse Aux Pins, Anse Boileau, Anse Etoile, Anse Royale, Au Cap, Baie Lazare, Baie Sainte Anne, Beau Vallon, Bel Ombre, Cascade, Glacis, Grand Anse Mahé, Grand Anse Praslin, La Digue, Mont Buxton, Mont Fleuri and Pointe Larue.

In a press release, the Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) said the primary objective of the survey is to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of adults aged 18–65 regarding anticipatory and early action protocols for floods and storm surges in Seychelles.

The rationale for this survey is important to strengthen resilience against climate and disaster risks:

  •          High Risk Exposure: Many coastal settlements remain directly exposed to sea-level rise, storm surges, and heavy rainfall flooding.
  •          Alignment: Findings will support the national agenda under the Disaster Risk Management Act (2014).
  •          Community-Centric Governance: By capturing community perspectives, the survey ensures that disaster governance is participatory and locally grounded.
  •          Evidence-Based Planning: Insights will guide targeted interventions by RCSS, government agencies, and international partners, improving coordination and support.
  •          Sustainability of Resilience Efforts: Integrating community knowledge and practices into formal planning fosters ownership and long-term sustainability.

This survey forms part of the SEYCCAT-supported initiative aimed at promoting climate change adaptation through anticipatory action and last-mile community early warning systems.
