La Digue sewerage project on schedule

Work on the sewerage project on La Digue in progress

The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has said the La Digue sewerage project remains mostly on schedule, however minor setbacks may lead to a month’s delay.

The company’s engineer, Yannick Joseph, gave an update of the project this week, attributing the smooth progression of this project to the good cooperation they are receiving from the residents of La Digue and has thanked them for their understanding.

The project comprises two main components; the installation of a sewer collection system along the east coast of the island and the construction of a sewage treatment plant.

The first component of the works, which is the sewer collection system, has been divided into two lots and awarded to Earth Development Pty Ltd and Ascent Projects Sey Pty Ltd respectively. It involves the installation of pipelines, manholes and inspection chambers.

According to PUC, this now stands at 20% completion. Recently, works being undertaken by Earth Development in the La Passe areas have extended on-road.

The works will be undertaken mostly in April 2023. PUC has advised contractors to keep disruptions at its minimum as far as practicable. However, it has also advised the residents, business operators, and especially the motorists to take extra precautions while commuting in this area.

“It is expected that with works reaching the high traffic area, (at the roundabout in the vicinity of the jetty), some level of disruption is expected,” explained Mr Joseph.

Meanwhile, part of the sewer collection system being undertaken by Ascent Projects Sey Pty Ltd, in the L’Union Estate areas, is also well under way.

Mr Joseph said outstanding work is the installation of lifting stations. PUC is now in the process of finalising the tender documents for the procurement of the same.

With regard to the second component of works which involves the construction of a sewage treatment plant at L’Union Estate, a contract has been awarded to Green Island Construction Company (GICC) at the contractual price of $3.2 million. This will be funded through PUC’s own resources.

According to PUC, the contractor will be mobilising on site in the coming weeks.

The company said from the onset of the project which started in mid-2022, there has been minimum adverse impact on the island’s daily activities.

“However, as of February 13, 2023, part of the Grand Anse road will remain temporarily closed for the duration of approximately three months to facilitate the undertaking of necessary works,” said Mr Joseph.

PUC’s project liaison officer has been in contact with most of the residents and motorists in the area to advise them to make use of alternative route.

The treatment facility will have the capacity to treat an average flow of 1000 cubic metres per day. Once completed, the centralised sewerage system will bring about numerous benefits, among them a reduction in the levels of pollution of the ground water and surface water resources, environmentally sustainable developments and potential for recycling water for irrigation purposes.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of this year.
