Seychelles takes part in SADC council of ministers meeting

Seychelles joined other member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to take part in the SADC council of ministers meeting held this week.

The deliberations and discussions centred on Covid-19, the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-30 and other critical issues of importance to the region.

The hybrid meetings are took place from June 21 to 23, 2021, the first such meeting of its kind for SADC, with both physical and virtual attendance of participating member states.

Ambassador Claude Morel, representing Minister Sylvestre Radegonde, delivered a statement on the relevance of maritime security to the region, particularly in light of the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado, Northern Mozambique.

The ambassador called on the SADC members to take cognisance that the Jihadi insurgency in Cabo Delgado is attributed to multidimensional causes, primarily social and economic factors. To address these same socio-economic factors and to identify long-term practicable solutions, the issue needs to be looked at in a holistic manner without focusing solely on a military approach.

SADC remains a key link between Seychelles and the rest of Africa and presents an invaluable crossway into the region’s market.

The Seychelles delegation comprised Claude Morel, Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of South Africa & SADC, as well as head of delegation; Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave, principal secretary in the Foreign Affairs department; Steve Lalande, director general in the Regional Affairs Division; Christian Faure, director of Regional Integration Section and Rebecca Julienne, desk officer for SADC.
