The first ever high commissioner extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of Seychelles, Omar Abdul Razzak, presented his credentials to President Wavel Ramkalawan at State House yesterday morning.

This was in the presence of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde; the principal secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave; and the honorary consul for Maldives in Seychelles, Lambert Bonne.

Speaking to the press after his accreditation, High Commissioner Razzak said that he will be working to further strengthen the good friendship and cooperation that exist between Maldives and Seychelles.

He added that the discussion with President Ramkalawan was centered on strengthening of bilateral relations, fisheries, education, tourism, youth, trade and investments, including an air agreement.

“The Maldives and the Seychelles enjoy a relationship which is based on mutual trust, respect and friendship and I look forward to deepening bilateral relations, promoting tourism, enhancing trade and attracting investments between the two countries during my tenure as the non-residential high commissioner of Maldives to Seychelles,” he said.

High Commissioner Razzak noted that the Maldives values the past assistance and support provided by the Seychelles government and he will focus on continuing to explore more opportunities, especially for the Maldivian students in Seychelles.

“I am also eager to enhance people to people contact between our two countries via enhancement of investment opportunities and by early conclusion of the pending Air Service Agreement enabling direct air transport between our two countries,” HC Razzak said.

Following his accreditation, HC Razzak paid a courtesy call on Vice-President Ahmed Afif. He will also call on other cabinet ministers, the Speaker of the National Assembly Roger Mancienne, among other local and foreign dignitaries in the country.

HC Razzak brought greetings to the government and the people of Seychelles from the President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Salih and wished the country every success, peace, prosperity and good health and happiness.

He will be based in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Seychelles and Maldives established diplomatic relations on July 1, 1980.
