Seychelles contributes to electoral process in Ethiopia |23 June 2021
The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) deployed 13 observer teams to the 6th general election in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia which took place on Monday
The deputy head of mission was Lina Hoareau from Seychelles and it is the first time that a Seychellois is appointed as the deputy of an election observer mission. The other observers who took part in the mission were Jules Hoareau, Michael Charlette, Andy Bristol and Tressy Dine.
The Eastern Africa Standby Force Election Observation Mission (EASF EOM) consisted of 28 observers from EASF member states namely; Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Seychelles, Uganda, Rwanda and Comoros. The EASF EOM was led by Ambassador Abdillah Aouled Ali from Djibouti.
The elections, originally scheduled for May 2020, were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic which, according to the government, made it necessary to declare a state of emergency.
Nearly one fifth of the population did not vote in this election.
The election was held at a very difficult time for Ethiopia especially with the current Tigray conflict and reports of human rights violation.
EASF was the only international observer group accredited for the last presidential election held in October last year in Seychelles.
EASF has already sent its final report with recommendations on how to improve the election process in Seychelles.
