Youths show interest in Seychelles’ history

Four students who were keen to know about certain aspects of Seychelles’ Independence, met with historian Tony Mathiot last week in an informal interaction.

The dialogue forms part of activities organised by the National Museum of History to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Independence of Seychelles from Great Britain.

“Their questions varied widely and I was asked for how many years Seychelles was under British administration, if Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth took part in the Independence celebrations and if there was any female minister in the cabinet of ministers. They were quite unusual but pertinent questions coming from the perspective of the youth,” shared Mr Mathiot.

The historian also noted that it’s a thrill to engage with the youth regarding the facts of history.

“You are asked questions that adults don’t ever think of asking. It’s a thrill really. I appreciate their curiosity and enthusiasm,” Mr Mathiot said.

Meanwhile, Bella Rose, the museum curator, is reminding the public that they are invited to view a virtual presentation on the history of Seychelles from 1811 to 1976 which will run from June 23-25 and on June 30, 2021.
