Seychelles and Qatar cement relations in military and sports |23 March 2021
Seychelles and Qatar have signed two new cooperation agreements in the fields of military and sports.
The agreements were signed on Sunday following bilateral discussions held on the sidelines of the official visit by President Wavel Ramkalawan to the State of Qatar.
The Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde, signed both agreements on behalf of Seychelles with the deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
With the existential importance of maritime security and coastal surveillance as a prerequisite to safeguarding against human and drug trafficking, piracy and other forms of terrorism, the new MoU on military cooperation further reflects a critical milestone in enhancing the Seychelles-Qatar relations in the domain of military and maritime security.
Similarly the MoU in the field of sports signifies the mutual commitments of the two countries to explore beyond the scopes of traditional fields of collaboration. Particularly, in noting the tremendous challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic poses to the normal ways of sports interactions by adversely impacting people-to-people contact, this MoU defies the present situation in anticipation of the restoration of a sense of normalcy.
Both MoUs were signed in the presence of President Wavel Ramkalawan of Seychelles and the Amir of the State of Qatar, His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
