President Wavel Ramkalawan has appointed the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Hon. Sebastien Pillay, as a member of the Platinum Covid-19 Committee.

This follows a meeting convened yesterday at State House by President Ramkalawan with the three leaders of the National Assembly – Speaker Roger Mancienne, leader of government business Bernard Georges and Hon. Pillay.

The President’s decision to appoint Hon. Pillay as a member of the committee stems from the strong belief that the Covid-19 pandemic is a national health crisis and should be treated as a non-political matter and as such, Hon. Pillay in his capacity as the leader of the opposition should be represented at the highest level of decision-making.

The President has expressed appreciation that Hon. Pillay has welcomed and accepted his invitation to collectively work together with the committee and henceforth join forces to make greater contributions for the benefit of the people and the country.

Also present for the meeting at State House were Vice-President Ahmed Afif and Designated Minister and Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Jean-Francois Ferrari.

The meeting was also an opportunity for President Ramkalawan to brief them on the new Covid-19 developments in the country.
