Public health workers: The unsung heroes protecting community health |26 September 2026

As the world marks World Environmental Health Day on September 26, public health officer Kelly Charlette reflects on 21 years spent protecting communities, preventing disease and promoting healthier living across Seychelles.

Every year on September 26, World Environmental Health Day is observed globally to highlight the vital connection between the environment and human health. The day draws attention to environmental factors that influence health and well-being, including air quality, water, sanitation, housing and population growth.

While much of the work carried out by environmental and public health professionals happens behind the scenes, its impact on communities is significant. These workers help protect public health through inspections, disease prevention, sanitation monitoring, health education, emergency response and collaboration with agencies to address potential health risks.
