Seychelles, UNHCR discuss refugee policy and protection
The Minister for Social Affairs, Family & Equality, Pamela Charlette, met with UNHCR’s representative for Seychelles, Kavita Belani, on Wednesday. Also present were secretary of state Linda William-Melanie and principal secretary for Family & Equality Mike Morel.
Ms Belani, based in Pretoria and overseeing UNHCR operations in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Namibia, Comoros, Mauritius, and Seychelles, opened the meeting with an overview of UNHCR’s work. She highlighted the plight of the 136 million displaced people worldwide, many of them women and children affected by conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Israel, Iran, and elsewhere.
