Athletics: Cross-country series – races 2

Two wins in two races for Azemia, Lesperance, Gamatis and Ray

The second races of the cross-country series organised by the Seychelles Athletics Federation took place last Saturday at the Roche Caïman fitness trail with the favourites consolidating their top spots clinched during the first races back in December.

Like for the previous races, Saturday’s event – the second races in a series of three – were divided into seven categories which were the girls’ and boys’ under 16 years old where the young athletes covered 2km or one lap of the fitness trail, the boys’ under 18 years who covered 4km, or two laps of the trail, the men under 20 years old category who ran four laps (8km), the senior men over 20 years old who covered 10km (five laps), the female masters group who ran 6km (three laps) and the male masters over 35 years old who covered 8km (four laps).

Altogether, four athletes managed to once again come out first on Saturday, thus consolidating their top position earned during race one held in December.

In the boys’ under 16 years old group, Neil Azemia, representing Port Glaud Shooting Star (PGSS), finished first in 7 minutes 17.05 seconds (7:17.05) to maintain his winning performance from last year.

The next athlete to maintain his top spot from last year on Saturday was Kurt Lesperance, also of the PGSS, who competed in the boys’ under 18 category. Lesperance clocked 14:03.09 in the 4km race to finish first in the group.

In the female masters (women over 35 years old category) 6km race, Elva Gamatis clocked 32:08.6 to finish first, thus claiming her second successive victory.

The other athlete who claimed a second consecutive victory on Saturday was Chatkuli Rudra Ray who competes in the male masters category. Ray clocked 33:03.03 to finish first in the 6km race.
