Justice Anthony Fernando bids farewell at final Court of Appeal session

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Anthony Fernando, who will officially retire on August 7, 2026, presided over his final session yesterday morning at the Palais de Justice.

Chief Justice Rony Govinden and Supreme Court Registrar Juliana Esticot were also in attendance.

In a reflective and philosophical address, Justice Fernando – who has served 17 years on the bench and 35 years in public service – traced his career journey in Seychelles. He recalled that when he assumed the presidency of the Court in June 2020, more than 200 cases were pending. “That is no reproach to anyone; backlogs afflict judicial systems the world over. But it was the first thing I saw when I sat down, and it set the terms of everything that followed. We cleared it.”
