Shark Awareness Day underscores global and local conservation needs

Sharks – some of the ocean’s oldest and most misunderstood creatures – take centre stage today as countries around the world mark Shark Awareness Day, observed annually on July 14. The day promotes shark conservation, raises public awareness, and encourages a deeper understanding of the role these apex predators play in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
Conservation organisations, researchers, aquariums, and educators worldwide mark the occasion through educational campaigns and community outreach aimed at dispelling myths surrounding sharks and highlighting the growing threats they face.
