The Seychelles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday kicked off its first dog sterilisation campaign for the year with a neutering drive at the Anse Royale district administration.

A total of 79 dogs were sterilised yesterday during the drive which started at 8.30am and concluded at around 4pm.

According to Jimmy Marie, the animal welfare officer at the Seychelles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the day started out slow and some of the 136 bookings did not show up.

Nonetheless, he continued, this allowed the SSPCA to cater for some walk-ins.

The sterilisation campaigns are being run by two nurses and nine doctors from Spay Sister, a UK-based charity with the aim of sterilising as many animals (dogs and cats) as possible throughout the world.

For this first round of sterilisation this year, SSPCA has accumulated more than 1,300 bookings and Mr Marie yesterday confirmed that booking will take priority over walk-ins.

Following yesterday’s drive at Anse Royale, the remaining sterilisation drives will be conducted as follows:

● January 17 - Grand Anse District Administration

● January 18 - Anse Aux Pins

● January 19 - Plaisance Central at the La Louise District Administration

● January 20 - St Louis District Administration

● January 21 - Plaisance Central at the La Louise District Administration

● January 22 - Anse Etoile District Administration

● January 23 – Bel Ombre District Administration

● January 24 - Bel Ombre District Administration

● January 25 - No sterilisation

● January 26 - Praslin at the veterinary clinic in Amitié, Grand Anse

● January 27 - La Digue

Mr Marie advised all those who have booked their appointments to respect the time of their appointments.

Dog owners can also bring in their pets for microchipping through a quick injection, which is said to be painless and quick.

No bookings are necessary for implantation of microchips which will only cost R50.
