ARID calls for action against torture on UN International Day
“June 26 is globally recognised as the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment are strictly prohibited under the Convention against Torture. No individual may be subjected to such practices under any circumstance, and it is the solemn duty of governments to uphold and protect the rights and dignity of every citizen.
“In marking this important day, the Association for Rights, Information & Democracy (ARID) strongly condemns all forms of abuse and torture in Seychelles. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission revealed numerous cases of torture and unlawful killings, particularly during the era of the one-party state. More recently, the ongoing Commission of Inquiry into the Montagne Posée prison incident has uncovered horrific reports of torture and killings. Disturbingly, institutions mandated to safeguard human rights, such as the Human Rights Commission, have remained silent on these grave matters.
ARID’s key concerns and recommendations
- Reconciliation and compensation: Establish effective mechanisms for reconciliation and compensation for victims of the TRNUC and the December 2024 prison incident.
- Judicial reform: Address judicial bias and delays in the dispensation of justice, including the prolonged detention of remandees.
- Detention conditions: Conduct a comprehensive review of conditions in all detention centres across the country.
ARID calls upon the Seychelles Human Rights Commission to:
- Protect victims: Put in place responsive mechanisms to safeguard victims.
- Ensure accountability: Strengthen existing systems to guarantee accountability and transparency.
- Build public trust: Enhance public confidence through visible action against abuses and torture.
