Police cases rise in first quarter of 2026

The number of cases handled by the police increased during the first three months of 2026, while family violence applications also rose sharply, according to the latest Crime, Justice and Security Statistics bulletin released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The report, which covers the period from January to March 2026, brings together data from the Police Department, Employment Tribunal, Family Tribunal, Probation Services and the Prison Department. It provides a snapshot of crime and justice-related activities across the country during the first quarter of the year.

One of the most notable findings was the rise in police-recorded cases. Overall, police dealt with 4,612 cases during the first quarter of 2026, compared to 3,925 cases during the final quarter of 2025, representing an increase of 17.5 percent. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, the total number of cases was up by 10.6 percent. The increase was driven by growth in both police-generated cases and reactive cases.

Police-generated cases, which are offences detected through proactive policing activities such as patrols and surveillance, rose from 3,002 cases in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 3,572 cases in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 19 percent.
