Former President Wavel Ramkalawan seeks formal apology following airport search
The Office of former President Wavel Ramkalawan has announced that the latter has initiated formal steps to seek reparations, following the police search incident that occurred upon his return to Seychelles on April 13, 2026, where upon arrival, Mr Ramkalawan was subjected to a search of his person and luggage at the VIP Lounge of the Seychelles International Airport, in the presence of armed police officers.
In a press release issued late yesterday, the Office of the former president said he was informed that he was suspected of carrying illegal drugs but the search yielded no incriminating findings.
“Today (April 20, 2026) he has formally written to the Commissioner of Police requesting an official apology, noting that the search appears to have been conducted without credible intelligence and may have been influenced by baseless and defamatory claims circulated on social media,” stated the press release.
“A second letter has also been addressed to Marie-Nella Crinsy De Charmoy Lablache, also known as ‘Queency Hope’, concerning defamatory statements made on April 7, 2026. She has been requested to issue a full and unequivocal public apology, in the form of a video, within seven (7) days, on the same social media platform used to disseminate the statements,” added the communique.
“Should these formal requests not be complied with, legal action in relation to both the defamatory statements and the unjustified search, which are considered to have caused serious harm to his reputation and credibility as a former Head of State will be commenced.”
“The Office of the 5th President reaffirms Mr Ramkalawan’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, justice, and the integrity of public life. While he respects the role of law enforcement authorities, it remains essential that all actions are grounded in credible evidence, professionalism, and respect for the rights and dignity of individuals,” concluded the press release.
