Government to impose price control on number of items

Government has announced that in the next 48 hours it will announce price control on a number of certain essential items in order to protect Seychellois consumers from indiscriminate and unlawful price increases.

It has come to government's attention that a number of wholesalers and retailers have hiked up prices on a number of items, essential and non-essential, on the basis of increases due to the war on Iran when in fact these items had entered the country before that date, and before any fuel and transport surcharges had kicked in.

A spokesman for the government said: “It is totally unacceptable and unethical to profit in this way from the Seychellois people who are already facing a high cost of living.

“We consider this action to be selfish, irresponsible and harmful to the people of Seychelles.”
