Slavery Abolition Day |03 February 2026
SFWU calls for justice and dignity
“The Seychelles Federation of Workers Unions (SFWU) joins the people of Seychelles and the global community in commemorating the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on this historic February 1, 2026.
“This year’s commemoration carries special national significance, as it is being observed as a public holiday for the first time in Seychelles, following the announcement by His Excellency, President Patrick Herminie. The SFWU warmly welcomes this bold and symbolic decision, which reflects a renewed national commitment to justice, human dignity, and the recognition of our shared history.
“The abolition of slavery was not merely an event of the past; it was a turning point in the struggle for freedom, equality, and workers’ rights. As a trade union movement, we recognise that the fight against slavery laid the foundation for today’s labour rights, social protection, and the ongoing struggle against modern forms of exploitation, forced labour, and injustice in the world of work.
“On this solemn day, the SFWU honours the memory of those who suffered under slavery and pays tribute to their resilience and resistance. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to defending decent work, fair wages, social justice, and respect for human dignity for all workers in Seychelles, without discrimination.
“As we commemorate the past, we also look to the future. The values of freedom and solidarity that emerged from the abolition of slavery must continue to guide national policies, industrial relations, and social dialogue, ensuring that no worker is left behind.
“The SFWU calls on all workers, employers, and national institutions to use this historic public holiday not only for remembrance, but also for reflection and renewed action towards a fairer, more inclusive, and just society.
“No exploitation. No silence. Dignity at work always.”
