Former MNA for Au Cap, Stephen Pillay, passes away |12 December 2025

The Office of the President has expressed its sincere condolences following the passing yesterday of the former member of the National Assembly for Linyon Demokratik Seselwa, Stephen Pillay. Mr Pillay was the elected member for Au Cap in the 2016 general elections, and was a member of the sixth cohort of Seychelles’ National Assembly
In its statement, the Office of the President said it was “with profound sorrow” that it had receive the sad news of Mr Pillay’s passing. “The President of the Republic, Dr Patrick Herminie, led the nation in paying tribute to the former legislator and expressed his deep personal grief at the loss of a lifelong friend.
“I am saddened to learn of the death of my longtime friend,” President Herminie stated.
“We went to school together, growing up in Mont Fleuri from childhood. We shared so many good memories. We have really lost a good soul.
“A dedicated servant to the nation, Mr Pillay served the people of Seychelles with distinction during his tenure in the National Assembly. He was known for his dedication to his constituency, Au Cap.
“The President, on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Seychelles, extends heartfelt condolences to Mr Pillay’s surviving spouse, children, family members, and friends during this time of bereavement.
“The nation remembers Mr Pillay as a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity,” read the statement, adding that details regarding the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family.
The Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party also shared a message of condolence. Writing on behalf of the LDS caucus in the National Assembly, the leader of the opposition, Hon. Bernard Georges, said Mr Pillay served under the then leader of the opposition, Wavel Ramkalawan.
Hon. Georges expressed sorrow at Mr Pillay’s passing, stating he is remembered for his calm demeanour and pointed questions and submissions on financial matters. “The LDS party leader, executive committee and the LDS Caucus in the National Assembly send their condolences to the family of Hon. Pillay on their loss and assure them that he is in their thoughts at this time,” ended the statement.
