SUM backs Perseverance volleyball dreams with balls donation
Young volleyball enthusiasts in Perseverance received a major boost yesterday when Maarco Francis, president of the Seychelles United Movement (SUM), officially handed over seven volleyballs to the aspiring athletes at their local court.
The group, all recent secondary school graduates, train regularly under coach Gaetan William, who praised their dedication and revealed plans to form the district’s first official volleyball team.
“Volleyball has been steadily gaining popularity in Perseverance, with local youths organising informal matches for years. This donation marks an important step towards formalising the sport in the district,” said coach William.
During the handover, Mr Francis spoke to the students about the value of teamwork, discipline, and resilience. “The lessons learned on the court – working as a team and overcoming setbacks – are invaluable skills that will serve you well in life and future careers,” he said.
Team captain Hannil Marie expressed heartfelt gratitude. “This donation was long awaited. It will really help us during training and motivate the team even more,” he said.
Despite training in the midday sun, the students’ enthusiasm never wanes. They cheer each other on and share laughter throughout long practice sessions – a testament to their commitment and camaraderie.
The donation is expected to have a wider impact on the community, inspiring younger students in Perseverance to take up volleyball and fostering a stronger sense of togetherness through sport.
Several SUM candidates and representatives attended the event, highlighting the movement’s commitment to youth empowerment and community sports development. This donation is part of SUM’s broader efforts to support young people through sport, education, and leadership programmes across Seychelles.
SUM’s initiative aligns with its mission to expand access to sport and nurture disciplined, confident, and socially responsible youth – the cornerstone of Seychelles’ future. The movement extends its best wishes to the Perseverance volleyball group as they work towards establishing an official district team.
