In a moment of pride and accomplishment, five staff members from the Landscape and Waste Management Agency walked the stage last week as graduates of the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture’s 2025 cohort.

Their success not only highlights personal and academic achievement but also shines a spotlight on the value of continued education, workforce development, and institutional support in the public service sector and underscoring the agency’s strong commitment to professional development and skills advancement in the agency.

The Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) team members completed their studies while maintaining full-time employment – an impressive feat that demonstrates both dedication and resilience. Three completed the Certificate in Horticulture and Landscaping, while two earned the Advanced Certificate.

This year’s graduation was made even more special as Terence Dodin and Steffie Morel received the Best Academic Performance awards for their outstanding results in the Certificate and Advanced programme.

“Balancing work, personal life, and my RPL studies was definitely challenging,” said Ms Morel, who joined the agency in 2011 as a Landscape Officer. “But this achievement boosts not only my self-confidence but also my capacity to perform better in my role. I’m now considering pursuing a diploma to further advance my career.”

Mr Dodin, who has served in various roles over his 12 years with LWMA – from Amenity Officer to Assistant Landscaper – reflected on the learning journey: “All the training and support from the agency have expanded my knowledge. It has given me more tools to motivate others and grow as a professional. I encourage everyone to take advantage of learning opportunities when they arise.”

Also graduating was Nicole Marie, a Landscape Officer with a decade of experience. She highlighted the motivational power of professional development:

“This training has added real value to my daily work and deepened my appreciation for the role landscaping plays in our society. I encourage both current staff and students to explore this vital field.”

Tania Arrisol (Togba), an Assistant Landscape Officer with 12 years of service, offered a message of perseverance and purpose: “Success is what motivates me to do a good job. Knowing that my perseverance contributes to greater achievements keeps me going. I believe that aligning your goals with the vision of your organisation is key to long-term success. The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Rounding out the group was Dorothy Belmont, who also boasts 12 years with LWMA. She spoke about the deeper meaning behind the achievement: “This certificate represents more than just paper – it reflects my years of hands-on experience and my dedication to growth. It’s never too late to learn something new. Every step forward is a seed planted for the future.”

All five staff members completed their courses through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway, a programme supported by the Seychelles Qualifications Authority (SQA). The RPL initiative allows experienced professionals to gain formal qualifications by validating their workplace knowledge and skills.

Their graduation is not just a celebration of academic excellence – it is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of institutional learning pathways, and the essential role of landscaping and horticulture in nation-building. Their stories serve as an inspiration for both current and future generations in the public sector. As Seychelles continues to prioritise environmental sustainability and aesthetic enhancement, the agency’s investment in staff development ensures it is well-prepared to lead with expertise and excellence.

The management and staff of the LWMA stand together to congratulate their colleague graduates for attaining their personal and professional development.
