Exhibition marking 60 years of national museums officially launched |17 May 2025

A new exhibition, entitled ‘Our Museums at 60:Tracing the History of the Seychelles National Museums from 1965 to 2025’, was officially opened at the National History Museum yesterday afternoon.
The exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the development of Seychelles’ national museums, reflecting six decades of cultural stewardship, public education and service. In addition, it honours the people, stories and contributions that have played a significant role in the success of Seychelles’ national museums.
It celebrates the collective journey of all the institutions that form the Seychelles National Museums, including the Natural History Museum, the National Herbarium, the Conservation Unit, and the Events Unit. Each of these entities has played a vital role in shaping a museum landscape that is more inclusive, more accessible, and more reflective of Seychelles’ national identity.
Director of the National Museums, Beryl Ondiek, explained that the exhibition is a celebration of vision, perseverance, and shared cultural pride, and decades of dedication to preserving, interpreting, and honouring the diverse and dynamic heritage of Seychelles.
“Our heritage is not a luxury – it is a necessity. It roots us in who we are, offers insight into where we've come from, and helps guide the future we seek to build. In this era of transformation – environmental, technological, and social – the role of museums has never been more vital.”
