Early Warnings: A lifeline against disasters

What is an Early Warning System?

An Early Warning System is a vital tool and framework for disaster risk management. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction defines it as: “An integrated system of hazard monitoring, forecasting and prediction, disaster risk assessment, communication and preparedness activities that enable individuals, communities, governments, businesses and others to take timely action to reduce disaster risks before hazardous events.”

Such systems are essential in the adaptation to climate change aiming to avoid or reduce the damages caused from weather, climate, water and environmental-related hazards, and in mitigating the impact of such hazards through science-based decision-making to reduce disaster risk, thereby helping save lives and reduce economic losses.
