Seychelles slips in global press freedom ranking

Seychelles has dropped eight places in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, released yesterday by Reporters Without Borders, ranking 45th out of 180 countries with a score of 68.56.

This marks a decline from its 37th position last year, where it scored 73.75. The fall comes at a time of broader global deterioration in press freedom, driven primarily by economic pressure across the media industry.

The RSF Index reveals that economic pressure – more than direct attacks on journalists – is now the primary threat to press freedom worldwide. The economic indicator, one of five used to assess the media environment, has reached a historic low, contributing to what Reporters Without Borders (RSF) now describes as a “difficult” global situation for press freedom.

According to the index, physical threats to journalists remain rare in Seychelles, and the legal environment supports press freedom. The country benefits from a diverse media landscape, with around 10 media outlets in operation, including both public and private radio and television channels.
