Seychelles’ qualification stage for the Indian Ocean Championship regional dance tournament will be held tomorrow, Saturday February 24, 2024, at the Victoria Gymnasium. This will serve as a gateway to the regional competition in Mauritius from July 18 to 21, 2024.

Chief executive of the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) Albert Duncan made the announcement during a press briefing at the council’s headquarters in the Sacos Tower, in the presence of SNYC’s coordinator youth leadership and entrepreneurship development, Josette Cadence and Ken Hassenjee (Kenjee), director of the Street Dance Wake Up Session and organiser of the Indian Ocean Championship from Mauritius.

A series of workshops for aspired young dancers will be held today in different regions including Praslin and La Digue, covering various types of dance such as hip hop, Afro dance and breakdance. The workshop will also provide information on the judging aspects of the competition.

Qualification for the competition is set to start at 1pm and will go on till 6pm on Saturday at the Victoria Gymnasium. Afro dance is reserved for girls, while hip hop and breakdance categories will be a one-on-one competition.

The entry age requirement is 15 years and above, and a number of 50 participants will be accepted.

Mr Duncan said the competition was brought to their attention by the Seychelles Youth Dance Association along with Mr Kenjee.

He also mentioned that since Seychelles was the only country left to enroll in this competition, SNYC happily got on board to help organise the event.

SNYC is inviting young people to come forward and show their talents and is also urging the public to support the young generation.

“For us at SNYC, such events are very important in the development of our youths as it exposes them on an international level. It gives our youth the chance to be able to network and gain exposure on an international stage. It will allow the youth to get creative and show off their talents and to represent our country,” said Mr Duncan.

Members of the public are advised that tickets will cost R100 for kids from 5 to 18 years old, and R150 for adults. Participants who qualify are requested to contribute R75.

Seychelles NATION wishes them all the best.
