Seychelles loses its sole male centenarian

Mr Hoareau receiving the visit of First Lady Linda Ramkalawan recently

Raymond Hoareau, Seychelles’ only male centenarian, passed away on Monday in Amitié, Grand Anse Praslin and was laid to rest yesterday.

Mr Hoareau became the only male centenarian on May 30, joining 12 centenarian women. He was born in 1923.

Born on Félicité Island, Mr Hoareau later moved to the main island of Mahé during his childhood. As an adult, he relocated to Praslin for work opportunities, where he spent a significant portion of his life. During his working years, Mr Hoareau is said to have been a jack of all trades and was a mechanic, fisherman, carpenter and more.

He was father to seven children; two had already passed. He is survived by 34 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The district administrator of Grand Anse Praslin, Chantal Larue, yesterday expressed her condolences following the passing. “It is with great sadness that the Grand Anse Praslin district authority learned of the passing of Mr Raymond Hoareau on Monday morning. Seychelles mourns the loss of its only male centenarian who had an enduring spirit and unmatched zest for life,” she said.

Mr Hoareau made the news earlier this month when he was visited by First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, who spent some time at his residence and presented him with a hamper, and her signature enamel mug, as a small token of appreciation.

Seychelles NATION conveys its sincere condolences to Mr Hoareau’s family during this sad time.
