SIT showcases achievements through open day

The Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) yesterday opened its doors to the general public, parents, secondary schools students, learners from other professional centres and its partners in industry.

The open day at its campus in Providence was to showcase the institution’s achievements over the past four years, expose visitors to the various daily practical activities by learners on the different programmes and allow them to interact with staff and learners.

The event was also attended by the Minister for Lands and Housing, Billy Rangasamy; the principal secretary for education sector development, John Lesperance; the chairperson of SIT Board, Philip Morin; and SIT’s director, Hubert Barbe.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Barbe stated,“The role played by technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in imparting skills to our young learners and contributing to the growth of our country cannot be over emphasised. To achieve such ambition requires that SIT receives the support and collaboration of all its stakeholders and partners in TVET. The year 2019 was very promising when SIT began implementing its action plans to realise its objectives.”

The director further highlighted some remarkable achievements since, as a result of the team effort by the management and staff with the guidance of their governing board. These include an increase in the number of locally developed TVET training programmes for secondary five school leavers, which has increased and is now 20, leading to an increase of annual quota intakes of secondary five school leavers.

Since 2019, SIT has been operating under a new organisational structure comprising an assistant director for studies, a quality assurance officer and a registrar. SIT is now ‘Provisionally Accredited’ from SQA (Seychelles Qualifications Authority), and if all goes well, the professional centre should achieve ‘Full Accreditation’ status in 2024.

The centre continues to receive support and assistance from an increased number of local partners with the signing of several memoranda of understanding, and also focuses on its staff’s career development and digitalisation of its operation, among others.

During the open day, guests were able to purchase different wood and metal products such as barbecue grills, chairs, doors and stools as well as electrical extensions, made by the learners.

Various SIT partners had also set up their stalls on the campus to recruit the soon-to-be SIT graduates, who will be joining the world of work.

The open day, which continues today, also saw cultural performances by the centre’s Creole Festival team.
