Six arrested in witchcraft-related offences |23 September 2023

Six people, including a 58-year-old of Tanzanian nationality and five Seychellois appeared before the Magistrates Court yesterday and are being held in custody until Monday when they will reappear before the court in relation to witchcraft associated offences.

The nature of the offences include carrying out advice in a matter of witchcraft contrary to section 182 A of the penal code, trespassing on burial places, contrary to section 127 of the penal code, insult to religion of any class contrary to section 125 of the penal code, and writing, or uttering words with intent to wound religious feelings contrary to section 128 of the penal code.

The Tanzanian national was arrested on Thursday, while a 54-year-old self-employed of Ma Joie was arrested on Thursday, similarly to a 58-year-old businessman from La Digue.

As for the three other suspects – a 44-year-old self-employed residing at Grand Anse Mahé, a 62-year-old unemployed residing at Anse Aux Pins, and a 49-year-old businessman residing at Baie Lazare – they were arrested yesterday.
