Education ministry hosts Cambridge certificate presentation and Best Learner Award 2022 |10 June 2023

30 learners recognised for their achievements
A ceremony to recognise and honour a group of outstanding learners who did exceptionally well in the Cambridge International Examinations in 2022 was held yesterday morning at the SITE auditorium.
There were 30 learners who had obtained a total of 53 Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards from six different schools, including both public and private, as well as the Seychelles Institute of Distance Open Learning (SIDOL) and private candidates.
Present for the Cambridge Best learner Award and certificate presentation were the Minister for Education, Dr Justin Valentin; the principal secretary for Education Sector Development, John Lesperance; and the International Education Contract Manager of the Sub Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean, Jennie Wellbelove.
The awardees had all been selected by Cambridge Assessment International Education, based on their overall performance in each of the subjects they sat for the October/ November examination in 2022. They received certificates in the Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level examinations.
In his opening speech, Mr Lesperance encouraged the awardees to let their achievement serve as a perpetual string of motivation to inspire them to reach greater heights.
“These students have brought pride and joy not only to their school and their parents but also to Seychelles,” he said.
For her part, Ms Wellbelove said that the number of students has increased since last year, to which she said is a “testimony to the increasing success of the schools”.
She went on to congratulate the students for the hard work and dedication they have put into their studies as it is one that consists of many sacrifices and attention.
“When it comes to exam day you are the only one that can have any influence on what your results would be and today, you being here is a proof of that,” she said.
There were 5 learners who received certificates in the category best across IGCSE. Another 5 learners in the category best across AS level and 5 in best across A level. There were also 5 learners who received a certificate for high achievers in specific subject in IGCSE, 10 high achievers in AS level, 7 high achievers in A levels. There were also 6 learners who were Top in Seychelles in IGCSE and two were top in Seychelles in A level. Lastly was the learner who obtained 4th place in the world in Second Language IGCSE, Elle Wirtz.
Elle Wirtz said she is honoured to have obtained such a prestigious award as she was not expecting it.
“I am not going to let this award keep me from working even harder to get other awards. I am going to continue working hard,” she said.
