Football: Cosafa Under-17 Women’s Championship

Action from the Seychelles v Madagascar match

Another heavy defeat for our girls

  • Six goals for Alinah Lalasoa

Our young girls at the ongoing Council of Southern African Football Associations Under-17 Women’s Championship in Mauritius were once again in hot water yesterday, this time suffering an embarrassing 0-16 defeat at the hands of neighbours Madagascar.

Yesterday’s match and defeat, the second in a row for Seychelles, was highlighted by an impressive performance from Madagascar’s Alinah Lalasoa who scored six goals, matching the South African duo of Oyisa Marhasi and Tiffany Kortjie who scored six apiece against Seychelles on Saturday in their team’s 28-0 win.

For yesterday’s encounter at the St François Xavier Stadium, coach Vivian Bothe made a single change in the team who played against South Africa, starting with Gaelle Morel instead of Avril Ally.

Madagascar took the lead early in the match, precisely in the sixth minute through Lydia Hortense Razanajohary, before Marie Clara Raveloarisoa doubled the score in the ninth minute.

From then on, the floodgate was opened, with Madagascar scoring 14 more goals to comfortably win the match 16-0.

The Madagascar goal scorers were Razanajohary (6th, 24th), Raveloarisoa (9th, 37th) Razanajohary (47th), Raheriarisoa (70th), Charline (60th), Aniera (86th), Lalasoa (12th, 42nd, 55th, 63rd, 81st and 87th), and Jenny (33rd and 90th).

In their third match, the girls of coach Bothe will be facing Botswana who beat Madagascar 6-0 in their opening match.

For yesterday’s defeat, coach Bothe blamed it on tiredness on the part of the girls who he said had never played the full 90 minutes before taking part in the competition.

He also acknowledged the superior fitness and agility level of the Malagasies.

Having observed the performance of South Africa and Madagascar, coach Bothe also mentioned the need to have an academy and a good structure set up locally if we want to see a start, let alone progression in local women’s football, if we want to take part in competitions of this level.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s other group B match, South Africa beat Botswana 5-1.

Two group A games were played on Sunday at the St. François Xavier. Guest nation Uganda put up a high-octane 11-star performance against hosts Mauritius in their second game to win 11-0. The win follows their opening 1-1 draw against Zambia.

In the other match, Zambia beat Comoros 15-0.
