President Wavel Ramkalawan yesterday appointed Alexandra Madeleine as a judge of the Supreme Court, during a ceremony at State House.

Ms Madeleine was appointed following the recommendations of the Constitutional Appointments Authority, in accordance with Article 126 to 127 of the Constitution.

During the ceremony, Ms Madeleine took the two oaths, namely the oath of allegiance to the Constitution, and the judicial oath.

“I am honoured and humbled to be appointed as judge of the Supreme Court of my country and to join the judiciary in the task to deliver justice for the country,” said Ms Madeleine.

She added that this appointment means a lot to her as it’s a big achievement from where she started her career.

Ms Madeleine completed her O-Levels and A-Levels with the former National Youth Service (NYS) and Seychelles Polytechnic.

She holds a Master of Laws (Petroleum and Policy) with distinction from the University of Dundee, Scotland and a Post Graduate Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Drafting from the Ghana School of Law and received a Bachelor of Laws with Honours LLB (Honours) from the University of Mauritius.

Ms Madeleine started her legal career as a part-time legal researcher in December 2004, and qualified as a barrister-at-law in Mauritius in 2008.

In July 2009, Ms Madeleine joined the Attorney General’s chambers as a state counsel and gained promotions up to assistant principal state counsel in June 2012.

Since July 2016, she has served as an attorney-at-law and notary public. She has 14 years of experience in the practice of law, including six years in private practice.

Ms Madeleine is also a part-time lecturer in Criminal Law and Procedure at the University of Seychelles since 2016.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Speaker of the National Assembly Roger Mancienne, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Rony Govinden, and President of the Court of Appeal Antony Fernando, among other guests.
